Junior Junkanoo

The Island School has close connections to the local schools in Deep Creek, Eleuthera. The first week I was there I visited a special event called Junior Junkanoo. Junior Junkanoo is a middle school version of the centuries long holiday, Junkanoo, held during a few days off during the Christmas season. This was because when the Bahamas was under slavery, these were the national days off every slave was given. However, the Official Site of the Bahamas also says that this tradition was started by John Canoe. Canoe is a legendary West African Prince and local hero who is said to have outwitted the English. Others say that it came from the French "gens inconnus." This means "unknown" or "masked people."

Nowadays, it's a celebration of "freedom." A parade is held, costumes are worn and loud, joyous music is played. A competition is held between towns to decide the best parade and then a national competition between islands. On the middle school level, it's just between an island's middle schools. It's still considered very important and build self esteem, adds school spirit, and enhances patriotism for the students' country. It's also an opportunity to learn about involvement, critical thinking, creative development, and many other important skills for growth.

It was a great experience and a privilege to watch. I didn't know what to expect, maybe some cute costumes and dancing. However, I was proven wrong by the large floats, organized performances, and the pride and spirit they had in them. To read up on more details on this cultural tradition, feel free to read the website here.

That's all I have to say!

x Emma
